How to drink
What's the best way to brew matcha?
Absolutely! Brewing matcha is a beautiful ritual that highlights the unique qualities of Japanese green tea powder. Here’s a step-by-step guide for preparing matcha using the traditional Japanese method:
What You’ll Need
- High-quality matcha powder
- Tea bowl (Chawan)
- Bamboo whisk (Chasen)
- Sifter (optional, but helps prevent lumps)
- Hot water (about 80°C / 176°F)
- Tea scoop (Chashaku) or small spoon
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Sift the Matcha
Measure out 2 grams (roughly 1 to 2 chashaku scoops or about 1 teaspoon) of matcha powder. For best texture, sift the powder directly into your tea bowl. This helps break up clumps and ensures a smoother, frothier finish. - Heat the Water
Boil water and then let it cool to about 80°C / 176°F. Using water that’s too hot can scorch the matcha and produce bitterness, while cooler water brings out sweetness and umami. - Add Water to Matcha
Pour 70 ml (~2.36 fl oz) of hot water into the bowl with sifted matcha powder. This is the typical ratio for “usucha,” or thin matcha, which is commonly enjoyed in Japan. - Whisk Properly
Using your bamboo whisk, briskly whisk the matcha and water together in an M or W motion—not a circular motion. This aerates the tea and creates a layer of foam on top. Aim for a smooth, creamy consistency with a fine froth. - Enjoy Immediately
Matcha is best enjoyed right after preparation. Sip directly from the bowl to experience the full flavor: creamy, sweet, savory umami, and a gentle hint of astringency.
Tips for Success
- Sifting the powder before whisking is key for avoiding lumps.
- Whisk vigorously for about 15-30 seconds for a frothy texture.
- Adjust strength to suit your preference by varying the amount of powder or water.
- For a richer “koicha” (thick tea), use more matcha powder and less water.
